I am blogger so i have a blog and my blog have a theme. When you visit a blog what is the first thing attract you to the blog ? I am sure it’s the look of the blog and you will not care about the content. May be when you came from a search engine.
Designers will create their own themes like my friend Suleman. He created a great theme for his blog Sulbiz. I want to say don’t design your theme if you don’t have experience in graphics because people will immediately close your blog and may not visit it again. There are millions of blogs have bad themes and you will notice what you will say when you have a bad luck and check one of them.
In the top of this post you can see three banners of my favorite blogs. They are JohnChow, JohnCow and DoshDosh. And i will talk with you about every blog designing.
JohnChow.com is a blog about money making online so you will see the banner has a Ferrari Car and with this car John Chow wants to attract you and tell you that if you follow my posts i will lead you to get a car like this. So you will get attracted and you will be a reader of this blog. This theme is unique and exclusive for JC.
JohnCow.com is inspired in the of JohnChow.com but it has a great theme indeed. That theme is also inspired from the COW word i think the designer of this banner must be a great one. This theme is colorful theme and will attract you because it have cows and bright green color. Also the cartoon character looks fine there.
DoshDosh.com is a wide blog and have alot of readers. DoshDosh has a simple theme. A banner written on it DoshDosh and small logo but still a clean design and eye friend. With that simple theme DoshDosh has been a star in blogging sky.
I hope that you got my message here. Choosing a theme must be based on these points :
- Your theme must will be inspired of your blog name and content.
- Choosing simple theme will be better if you don’t find a theme for your content
The main point you must look for if you want a successful blog is to get a unique theme. Yes this will make your readers respect you and will make your blog grow faster.
I know that JohnCow.com sells his theme to bloggers but he changed the background and the logo so it’s 80 different.
I didn’t get my custom theme but i edited the header, colors, icons and background. So it looks like a custom one and i will add it here for downloading when i change it with another one.
May be you will use cartoon character for fun and your readers will love. It easy to get cartton charcters and you can use flickr for faster results.
Do you have the right to edit a theme ?
I think yes you can do that but don’t remove the author’s credit because this will be illegal. And it will be better to write that you have changed the theme and add the link of the author and thank him so your readers will respect you more.
Which is the best ? 2 columns theme or 3 ?
Try to get apply your needs and don’t choose a 2 columns and put every thing in it because it will make the sidebar longer. Also three columns is better when you have a long list blogroll like Cuzoogle.com.
Once you have changed a theme ask your readers about feedback because they are readers and you should make them more comfortable with your blog.
I recommended ThemeBot for wordpress theme and BlogFlux for different blogs software.
You will need this tool for editing colors and if you can’t make a good banner try to request one in large forums. May be you will write about the designer of your banner and link his site but make sure that you will get pro banner for free. When you start a topic in a forum tell them that you will write about the deisgner site and you will link it. Thats will encourage designers.
But remember one thing : Good theme + Better Content = Successful Blog
